How we measure AI visibility for dental practices

We ask AI assistants the questions patients ask, under the same conditions every time, and record exactly what they say. No dashboards guessing at a score, just dated screenshots you can check.

The rules we test by

  1. Real patient questions. Each practice gets a set of 20, mixing treatment, town and concern. For example: "Best dentist in Manchester for dental implants", "How much does Invisalign cost in Stockport?", "Gentle dentist in Wilmslow for nervous patients". These examples show the kind of question; each practice's own set stays private.
  2. Four assistants. ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity.
  3. Same conditions. Signed out, same wording, same location, all within one short window, so the answers are comparable.
  4. Everything dated. Every answer is screenshotted with the date and time visible.
  5. Three outcomes. For each question and assistant, a practice is named (recommended in the answer), cited (one of its pages is used as a source) or absent.
  6. Same questions every month. The set doesn't change, so a change in results means something changed, not that we picked easier questions.

A real example: 24 September 2026

"Best dentist in Manchester for dental implants"
Conditions: 20:30–20:41, signed out, Manchester, all four assistants.

Result: Twelve practices were named in total. MCR Implant Centre was named by all four. City Centre Dental & Implant Clinic and Ucer Clinic were named by three. University Dental Hospital of Manchester was named by two. The other eight were each named by one assistant only.

What each assistant leaned on: ChatGPT cited Care Quality Commission inspection reports. Google's AI Overview drew on Business Profiles and review counts. Perplexity read practice websites and NHS pages.

What it shows: Different sources, one overlapping shortlist. The practices named everywhere were the ones described clearly and consistently across the places each assistant reads.

What a test can't tell you

Answers change with time, location, account and search mode. One test is a snapshot, not a ranking. That's why we repeat the same set monthly and report the trend, not a single result.

Practices named in our example tests appear because the assistants named them on that date. It isn't an endorsement or a claim about any practice. If you'd like your practice's name removed, email shrey@shraix.co.uk.
